Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27

This verse from the bible has alway stood out to me. There is a lot of debate in the world today about religion. We hear and even see a lot of things that give religion a black eye.

My personal view has mostly been that I don’t especially care about religion. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ and that is really what it is all about for me. I think that Jesus pursues relationship with his people. All through the bible you see relationship being modeled. Some are good ie. David and Jonothan, some are not so good ie. Sampson and Delilah. But the point is that all of life really centers around relationships.

In our roll as foster parents I am finding that it is all about (big surprise!) Relationship. Most of the issues our kids deal with were caused by unhealthy relationships or non existent relationships. And (another big surprise!) it turns out that the best way to help them deal with their “issues” is through Relationship.

So, back to the verse. It is interesting that one of the few things that the bible has to say specifically about Religion has to do with Widows and Orphans. The thing that stands out to me about those two groups is that they have both suffered the breaking of relationships.

Bottom Line: It’s all about Relationships.

And just in case that makes things sound easier, just let me tell you.

Relationships are sometimes Messy, Ugly, Hard, Painful, Destructive and did I mention Hard!

But…they can also me Awesome! And they are the best tool we have!
